Pallas Couture’s Joy Morris had a task of love before her in designing the wedding gown for her daughter Philippa. What an amazing creation – we adore it!

Philippa’s story of her day:

“As this was our second wedding (we eloped in Gibraltar in June 2009)and held on New Years Eve, we had a licence to create a relaxed and festive vibe for the day.

I wanted to the day to be very personal, so we had a good friend act as “celebrant” as we exchanged hand-written vows, and had another close friend sing.

The reception was held in a garden, and I wanted it to have the feel of a cosy and inviting living-room space under the stars. It was a little bohemian/shabby chic, with Persian rugs on the grass and velvet lounges.

We rang in the New Year by all forming a circle and singing Aude Lang Syne, whilst a Scottish friend played the bag pipes in the middle. We handed out various wigs and dress-ups after midnight, which everyone loved wearing on the dance floor!”

Chocolate Rose – some more delicious cake designs!

A 3 layered chocolate cake with fun in mind – as you can see by the colours! The layers are sandwiched together with chocolate ganache, and the icing is butter cream that has been tinted violet to match the gorgeous flowers.

This 3 tier chocolate cake has stunning pink roses between each cake tier. The icing is also butter cream, and there are layers of cake in each tier sandwiched together with butter cream and raspberry jam. Yum!

I offer design, lettering and calligraphy, illustration and letterpress printing of event, corporate and personal stationery and announcements, greetings and printing for book arts. I also take commissions for gifts of prose and poetry in calligraphy and recognitions of service.

As personal consultation with many of my clients is not possible due to distance I can provide a comprehensives samples and information kit to assist clients with decision-making and to have on hand when discussing their requirements.

I started Design Calligraphy over 17 years ago and then incorporated letterpress as an offering in 2010 when the studio was renamed to Atelier Press and Calligraphy.  I have been inspired over the years to pursue, study and hone my crafts in calligraphy and letterpress by some wonderful mentors and craftsmen and women.

Weddings are a joyous occasion and no two are the same.

WHAT MAKES YOUR SERVICE UNIQUE?

Atelier offers design, printing and calligraphy services in the one studio.  This allows me to offer truly unique and bespoke wedding stationery with extensive knowledge, skills and experience of all these crafts. It also means brides will save time organising their stationery and often costs.

HOW DO YOU KEEP IN TOUCH WITH THE EVER CHANGING TRENDS IN THE BRIDAL INDUSTRY?

I read extensively about the new trends in paper, styles and designs in the USA and Europe.  I stay in touch with other printers and the global letterpress community.  I am always conscious of the growing interest in producing environmentally friendly stationery without compromising quality; and have sought out suppliers with green credentials and paper stocks that are 100% recycled cotton or made from other sustainable plant sources.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?

I like unique, crafted and simple design, whether classic or contemporary, with attention to detail and incorporating the style of the couple to be married. In particular all the design elements should fit and complement each other.

WHO INSPIRES YOU AND WHAT YOU KEEPS YOU PASSIONATE?

I draw my inspiration from what is around me – nature, architecture, culture and art and the scope and imagination of my clients. As calligraphy and letterpress printing are both centuries old crafts there is always a broad historical canvas to consult, while incorporating modern ideas, type and techniques.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF ADVICE FOR OUR BRIDES?

Try to engage your wedding stationer as early as possible – when you have your wedding date, ceremony and reception details. This ensures plenty of time for consultation and collaboration so that you end up with something that truly reflects your own style and taste and suits your budget.

1. Use a professional wedding photographer – An uncle or friend with a fancy camera just isn’t enough.

2. Not all photographers are experienced enough to photograph a wedding. Weddings are very specialized and fast paced. Make sure your photographer has been in the wedding industry for many years. A business with many years under their belt (like Liuzzi Photography) is sure to be around for many more years.

3. Make sure you can connect with your photographer – this will ensure that your photos will have the relaxed and natural look to them.

4. Make sure that the photographs you see actually belong to the photographer that will photograph your wedding. Too many studios overbook themselves and then hand the weddings down to other photographers (most times with lesser experience).

5. Be sure that the wedding albums you view are real weddings. It has become a common practice to mock a wedding shoot to achieve amazing images with the best of lighting. Especially in Melbourne where the light and weather is constantly changing, getting the perfect image is very difficult – hence an experienced photographer is a must.

6. The old saying of ‘You get what you pay for’ truly stands in this industry. At the same token you don’t want to pay too much. If it sounds too good to be true it most likely is. To keep costs down many studios cut corners – most of which prove disastrous.

7. Be sure that your photographer shoots in RAW. This is the highest form in which you can capture an image. By shooting in RAW it gives you a broader spectrum of exposure, colour, tonal range,…etc. Many don’t shoot RAW because they are too lazy therefore they cut this corner and just shoot your wedding in jpg (very risky).

8. Get references from previous clients, great sources are google maps, Facebook (see if they have a page)! Is the studio on a preferred suppliers list?

9. Make sure there are no hidden costs. Always get a final cost on the final product that you would like.

10. Ask questions and lots of them. A true professional is only too happy to help you out and go beyond the call of duty.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT WEDDING MAKEUP?
I love the creativeness of it. Every face is a blank canvas. I feel a deep sense of satisfaction when an apprehensive bride walks through my door with a bare face and leaves elated as a perfectly painted and enhanced version of herself. It is humbling to have a bride select you to play such an integral part in one of the biggest days of their lives.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE OUR BRIDES?
Shopping around for the lowest price is not the best way to select a makeup artist. Look at their portfolio, and phone them with a prepared list of questions about the products they use and their experience. If they won’t take the time to chat with you and answer your questions, then they are probably not the right make-up artist for you. Chatting with them also gives you the opportunity to gauge whether or not they are going to be the right personality fit for the day. Your wedding day should be as relaxed and fun as possible. Surround yourself with people you like!

IN YOUR FIELD WHAT WOULD BE YOUR TOP TEN TIPS, ADVICE OR IDEAS TO PASS ON TO OUR BRIDES?

1. Lock a make-up artist in earlier rather than later. Most people leave make-up artists until the last minute. The best make-up artists like the best venues &photographers book quickly.

2. Ask the makeup artist how long they stay. Do they stay with you until the photos are taken and you depart for the church/ceremony? Try to avoid booking a make-up artist that books several weddings on the one day. You want someone who is focused on you and can take their time ensuring you look flawless, without staring at their watch and racing off to their next bridal party.

3. Start a skincare regime earlier rather than later. I recommend monthly facials from 6 months, increasing in frequency from 3 months until the day. Do not decide (having never had a facial before), to get a deep cleansing facial the week before your wedding. You would be surprise how many people do this and end up with a major breakout!

4. Exfolliate your lips regularly. Lightly brush over them with your toothbrush morning & night while brushing your teeth, to lift dead skin. And smother them with rosehip oil before going to bed. Get your bridesmaids into this routine too. Smooth lips make for beautiful lipstick/gloss application!

5. Don’t neglect your hands & feet. Many brides and bridesmaid are furiously painting their finger & toenails the morning of the wedding.

Do yourself a favour and book a manicure & pedicure appointment for the day before the wedding. Let the professionals take care of this allowing you to relax on the wedding day, and lessening the chances of smudged nail polish on the day.

6. Prepare for your consultation with your hair and make-up artists. Collect images of styles and colours that you like, and have pictures of the dresses and fabric samples where possible as well as any hair-pieces you are planning to wear on the day. Images assist with the communication process and ensure you are on the same page before you start.

Makeup, like art is interpretive. There are a million styles of smokey eye, so telling your makeup artist that this is the look you want will not necessarily result in the finished look you were after.

7. Try and book your make-up trial, hair trial and a dress fitting on the same day. This will allow you to see the entire look together, and make more informed decisions regarding your overall appearance.

8. Ask your make-up artist what lipstick brand and colour he/she has applied, and if she can sell you one on the wedding day. If your makeup artist doesn’t sell the lip colour they apply, I suggest you purchase one from a department store for touch-ups on the day.

No matter how well you are told your lip colour will last, it will need to be re-applied at some stage during the day or night.

9. Invest in blotting papers. Powder will cake up your make-up by the end of the day while blotting papers remove excess oil & shine without lifting, moving or caking your makeup.

10. Have an area reserved for your make-up artist on the wedding day that is well lit with the most natural light possible (near a window or under a skylight is preferable), and with enough room for he/her to lay out their kit. If the weather is warm it is also advised to have the air-conditioning or a fan running to cool the room before the make-up artist arrives.
