From pretty florals and fruits to the sensual scent of wood and amber, a wedding perfume has the power to linger. Here are some ideas to hit the perfect note on your wedding day.
Signature
A wedding day is an emotional experience, so for many
brides wearing the scent they know and love feels right. Wearing your signature scent is a great idea if it’s going to make you feel good and put both you and your groom at ease. Do make sure it fits your wedding style, if you’re having a casual wedding a heavy woody scent may be too much. Likewise, if you’ve created a traditional wedding you’re be better steering towards rich powdery notes rather than light and summery florals.
Something New
Scent is powerfully evocative so choosing a new fragrance will create a special memory for both you and your groom on your wedding day. Seek out your favourite designers’ latest release, or go shopping with your groom to find a scent you both love. If your groom wants to give you a wedding perfume as a gift, ask him to give you a short list to choose from – scent is personal so only you can know what you truly love and what will suit your wedding style.
Keep it Personal
Share the love – not necessarily your scent. Ideally, only you and your groom will be close enough to really appreciate the complexities of your wedding perfume. To give yourself a subtle but lingering scent, spritz perfume on your pulse points – the insides of the wrists, behind the ears and at the base of the neck. Or be truly decadent and spray your perfume in the air and walk slowly through the falling mist. This will subtly scent your wedding gown, hair and body. Estee Lauder used to spray her hairbrush so when she brushed her hair the scent gave her hair a lingering scent.
Traditional Vs. The Modern Wedding
Many brides choose to wear a scent that reminds them of someone special. Perhaps it’s your mother or grandmother’s scent that you want to channel. Wearing your grandmother’s Chanel No. 5 is the straightforward approach but if you want to find your own modern wedding perfume, look for a contemporary scent that shares similar notes – say the ylang ylang, aldehydes, and jasmine in No 5. Start with your favourite brand and ask if they have a scent that shares similar characteristics to the one you have such fond memories for.
Perfect Match
A perfume can smell very different when spritzed on the skin
so don’t blindly trust what you smell on the test strip. And don’t buy a scent just because it smells good on someone else either – different skin types can totally transform a scent (for good and for bad). A scent can also change from when you first apply it. So before you decide on your wedding perfume, spritz the scent on your skin and wait a while to see how the second and third characteristics of the scent develop. If you still love a scent an hour later, it could well be the one for you.
