Little Girls
A flower girl will bring unique charm and beauty to your ceremony. Just make sure you take care of her unique little girl needs.
For Good Luck
Traditionally, a young girl carrying flowers is said to bring good luck to a marriage. It was once customary for the flower girl to come from the bride’s family but today it’s acceptable to give this role to a member of your groom’s family or a close friend.
A flower girl walking down the aisle is a wonderful way to focus on the simplicity, purity and beauty of your ceremony. If either you or your groom has children this is one way to include them in the ceremony.

Flowers For Flower Girls
In ancient days, the flower girl carried sheaves of wheat, which represented fertility, growth and renewal. Today flowers are more common and like your own wedding bouquet, you may choose your flower girl’s bouquet based on the symbolic nature of a particular flower. Lilies represent purity, while ivy stands for fidelity. Or ask your flower girl to scatter rose petals, they’re believed to protect the bride from evil spirits and enhance her fertility.
In contemporary weddings, you may like to have your flower girl carry a small posy or basket of flowers using the same flowers as the ones in your own bridal bouquet. A pomander (a tight ball of flowers secured with a satin loop) is easy for little hands to carry and makes a lovely keepsake.
Flower Girl Frocks
A simple princess line dress is perfect but bear in mind that ankle or mid calf length is best for flower girls under the age of eight. Older girls can carry more length and weight in their gown.
Flower girl dresses should tie in with you and your attendants. To make sure her outfit compliments your bridal party, it’s a good idea to have your couturier make the flower girl outfit while she’s creating your attendants dresses. Flower girls dresses are often white with a coloured sash to match the attendants’ dresses, but a matching or gently contrasting tone looks beautiful too.
Always stick with quality fabrics for you flower girl as synthetics can itch and scratch. Winter flower girls are beautiful in velvet or satin, while summer girls love silk or tulle. Better still, these fabrics won’t crease.
Little Girl’s Accessories
Keeping little girls looking natural and simple is key.
A chic little bun or pony tail or perhaps loosely curled hair looks adorable – add a sparkly clip or a few fresh or silk flowers to make her feel special. Makeup should be kept to the bare minimum – if any. Ballet flats made in the same fabric as her dress is a simple and elegant shoe solution, or slip her into some pretty sandals or bejeweled thongs for more casual weddings.
Care For Your Flower Girl
Your flower girl may only need one or two dress fittings but it’s important her dress fits well – remember to leave room for growth, particularly if her dress is made months in advance. On the day, reduce the risk of spills, stains and damage by dressing your flower girl at the last minute.
Keep her happy and calm in the ceremony by explaining exactly what she has to do and keep a trusted adult (not the bride!) close by so she has guidance if she gets confused.
